The charm of the carnival in Verona

Carnival in Verona is one of the city's most heartfelt and beloved traditions, a mix of history, colours and flavours that involves young and old alike every year. Its origins date back centuries, and even today, the Verona Carnival retains its authentic, popular and convivial character, consisting of neighbourhood parties, historical masks and lavishly laid tables.
At the heart of the tradition is the famous Venerdì Gnocolar, the symbolic day of the Verona Carnival, during which the city centre comes alive with parades, music and allegorical floats led by Papà del Gnoco, the city's historical mask. This tradition has given rise to a deep connection with one of the most iconic dishes of the local cuisine: gnocchi, the undisputed star of Verona's tables during the festive season.

Alongside gnocchi, Carnival is also the realm of traditional sweets. Frittelle, soft and fragrant, often filled with cream, zabaglione or raisins, and galani (or chiacchiere), crispy and light, are a symbol of the festival throughout Italy. Every day of Carnival thus becomes an opportunity to get together, cook together and celebrate the pleasure of conviviality.
After savouring these traditional dishes, pairing them with wine can add an extra touch. A fresh and fragrant wine such as Chiaretto di Bardolino D.O.C. Spumante Brut goes perfectly with Carnival desserts, while for dishes such as gnocchi, it is ideal to choose a balanced wine that can accompany without overpowering the flavours, such as Bardolino D.O.C. Classico. The important thing is to keep the spirit of the festival alive: light-heartedness, sharing and enjoyment.

For the 2026 Verona Carnival, the grand parade of allegorical floats on Venerdì Gnocolar (Gnocolar Friday) is scheduled for Friday 13 February 2026, with over seventy floats, masks and marching bands bringing the streets of the historic centre to life. The Carnival traditionally ends with Shrove Tuesday, scheduled for Tuesday 17 February 2026, with the last convivial moments that close the festival.

The Veronese Carnival is not just a celebration, but a true philosophy: celebrating simplicity, being together and indulging in the taste of traditions. Because, like any self-respecting festival, Carnival is made up of smiles, lavishly laid tables and moments to be enjoyed until the very last toast. 🎉🍷
